When you start a new day in a new grade, all you worry about is who you're going to sit next to and if you are going to know anybody in any of your classes. The first day of tenth grade had started in the classes across the field from the school in Mrs. Valladares Spanish 1 class. I was seated in the back next to Mark and let me tell you, I could not have felt more invisible if I tried. i remember that he was the person who his papers were all over and he would work on something and not say a word while working, but the moment that something caught his attention or needed to get up for something would drop his pencil and just walk off. He did not say one word to me the entire first class. I can remember telling myself though, "holy crap this guy is messy and oblivious to me being alive, but he's got some nice eyes and he's cute".
The rest of the day dragged on and he time ticked by, and the same thing happened in every class. I was sat next to Mark and again, not a word. By the end of the day after several attempts to speak and he talks to everybody but you, the thought creeps into your brain that maybe it's just you. So the last class starts and the same thing, I am still sat next to Mark. This time though, this guy who has not spoken a word to me, finally turns and says "oh hey, you again!" Yes ladies and gentleman, his famous first words....oh hey you again.
So over the next few months we talk every once in a while but neither of us admitted to anything until homecoming....the day I met his sister that was apparently looking for his football jersey to wear to the homecoming pep rally and game. Being a cheerleader I needed a football players jersey and since Mark was on the team he gave me his. It was fate
Mark and I dated over the next year, going out sometimes got interesting sometimes being mistaken for twins....yes it has happened and broke up bc hey, we were 16 and stupid. By the way, biggest mistake ever. We went our separate ways, him going to the army and me moving in and out of state. We saw each other over the next years but nothing ever came to be. Which brings us to this past year
His sister had invited me out to her birthday celebration and for all I knew, it was a couple of her friends, her bf,....some people I didn't know. Then I got there and was shocked that Mark was sitting on the couch. throughout the night, the awkward conversation had to happen where, for all I knew he was still married and was only down for a bit. Spoiler alert: he wasn't, which meant he was single and available and my brain and heart had gone into overload realizing I still after 6 years of not hearing a word from him still had feelings for him.
And that brings us to now.... |
